What happens when heavy rain washes the residual off two days after an application. Whether the price is per visit or for the season. Whether it renews automatically.
Which matters more here than in most pest services, because this is a recurring commitment rather than a job with an end. A contract you don't read is a contract you're still paying for in September, possibly for a service that plateaued in June.

The number of visits, and the interval. Barrier treatments last weeks, not months, so the interval is a real number and it should be stated. Is it fixed, or weather-adjusted?
The treated area, defined. Whole property, perimeter band, or specific zones around your use areas. Vague area language is where the largest differences between quotes hide — treating a shaded band around a patio and looping an entire acre are very different amounts of work.
Whether larval work is included. This is the line that separates a programme that improves over the season from one that plateaus. Bacterial larvicide in catch basins, drainage channels, tree holes, and permanent water — or just barrier spraying?
What happens after heavy rain. Rain shortens the residual and refills every container simultaneously. Is a re-treatment included, offered at cost, or not covered at all?
The site survey. Whether a breeding site inventory was actually done, and whether you get the list. A contract without a survey is treating symptoms it never looked for.
The non-target exclusions. Flowering plants, vegetable beds, ponds with fish, beehives. These should be identified before the first application, not discovered afterward.
The renewal and cancellation terms. Does it roll over automatically? What notice is required? This is the line people find in year two.
The most common structure, and the one that plateaus. Spraying kills the adults present; the containers you didn't find deliver a new generation on their own schedule. The improvement flattens well short of expectations, and the standard response is another application.
Adults rest in shaded vegetation, so treatment follows the shade — and if you only use a deck, treating the whole boundary is a lot of area for the benefit of nobody standing in it. A defined-area contract is frequently cheaper and performs better where it matters.
Which means nobody has looked in your gutters, and gutters are the site most likely to be producing and least likely to have been checked.
Populations track rainfall, with a predictable surge about a week after heavy rain. A programme timed to the calendar rather than the weather misses the wave it should be catching.

Every mosquito biting you grew up in water, and the common container-breeding species typically stay within a few hundred yards of where they emerged. What's biting you on your patio hatched close enough to walk to.
Barrier treatment removes this week's adults. Larval treatment removes the generation before it exists.
And the effects compound differently. Every breeding site removed or treated is a permanent subtraction — one fewer source producing generations all season. Every barrier application is a temporary reduction that expires in weeks.
Which is why a larval-led programme needs less as the season goes on and a barrier-only one doesn't. A property surveyed and treated at the water needs fewer and lighter adult applications by August. A property that's only ever been sprayed needs exactly as much in August as it did in May.
The practical test on your contract: does it mention bacterial larvicide, catch basins, drainage channels, or tree holes? If not, you're buying adult control only, and the price should reflect that.

Plant pot saucers, the most common breeding site on residential properties. Gutters, which hold water invisibly all season directly above where you sit. Corrugated downspout extensions, holding water in every ridge. Buckets and watering cans by a back door. Bin lids, which hold a surprising amount in the rim.
Tarps and covers — every fold is a container. Children's toys and paddling pools. Wheelbarrows. Tyres. Bird baths and pet bowls. Recycling bins. Rain barrels without mesh. Low spots holding water after rain.
Clogged drains, catch basins, and drainage channels. Tree holes and depressions in trunks and root flares, which hold water for weeks and are invisible from ground level. Ditches and easements. Ornamental features without circulation, and unmaintained pools — which can out-produce everything else on a street.
If it holds water for about a week, it can produce mosquitoes. Anything emptied weekly produces none.
And the survey should split the list three ways: what you can remove for free, what needs larvicide because it can't be removed, and what's over the fence — because there are real limits to what treating your side achieves against a neighbour's untreated pool.

Adults don't spend the day flying. They rest in the undersides of leaves on shrubs and low branches, tall grass and damp ground cover, ivy on walls and fences, under decks and porches, behind stored items, along fence lines, and on the shaded side of structures.

Which keeps the treated area small — a shaded band around the space you actually use.
Flowering plants are excluded. Always — barrier products don't distinguish between mosquitoes and pollinators.

Fogging as a standalone service. Kills what's present and leaves nothing behind.
And two things that do work and appear on no contract: a fan on the space you're using — mosquitoes are weak fliers — and properly formulated personal repellent.
